A rundown of all the events that will be taking place all over Washington D.C. this weekend.

The Black Greek Festival Weekend 2021 is taking over Washington D.C.! This weekend will have Chocolate City decked out in all the colors of The Divine Nine. Though this gathering openly calls out The Black Greek community, this weekend full of events is focused on the various melanated shades of black people across the Greater Washington Area and beyond. We had the pleasure to sit down with Chelsea Brown, Black Greek Festival Co-Founder and very proud member of the illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, to learn more about what to expect for festivities, the partnerships and the social relevance in and outside of the homecoming-like atmosphere taking place at our nation’s capital.

What is the significance of The Black Greek Festival 2021?

The Black Greek Festival is powered by Miles & Stockbridge’s Black Business & Start-Up Initiative and The Sponsorship Concierge. In partnership with The Mayor’s Office on African-American Affairs, Target, The Honey Pot Company, Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, Cricket Wireless, Greekaholics, EatOkra, Eventnoire, Love More Brand, Battery Xchange, and DC Now Events, the inaugural event will consist of virtual events including a virtual stroll-off, panel discussions and a day of service providing support for human services professionals and homeless women in the D.C. area. The two outdoor events, “Black Greek Festival” and “Brunch Olympics”, will be located in the D.C. area and will highlight local Black-owned businesses and drive to support D.C.’s local economy. Attendees will fellowship with members of the Washington, D.C. and “Divine Nine” organizations. Participants will also support local initiatives to eradicate homelessness and support Black-owned businesses affected by the pandemic.

The Black Greek Festival has everything for everyone.

The Black Greek Festival has everything for everyone.

What makes Black Greek Fest more than your normal Divine Nine gathering?

BGF is focused on creating an experience for Greeks who may look to reconnect or engage after their undergraduate experience. Our festival weekend is rooted in a mission and commitment to providing opportunities for brotherhood, sisterhood and service.

What makes Washington D.C. the perfect setting for an event with this vibe?

This city is known for Black excellence! We wanted to exude the excellence of The District on a national scale. The amount of Black-owned businesses, ventures and opportunities is a draw for many people looking to learn more about the culture of D.C.

What can we expect for The Black Greek Festival going forward?

We hope to make this an annual event moving forward with opportunities to travel to other places and provide them with opportunities to support local black-owned businesses and initiatives. We will also continue serving the Washington D. C. community through The Black Greek Festival Foundation.

Be sure to learn more about The Black Greek Festival for all the events this weekend and to see the thriving partnerships and impactful outreach this wonderful organization does all year long.
